Bloggies: Tempest in a teapot?
Looking for Tampa Bay triumphalism over at Ain't Too Proud to Blog I got up-to-date on the Bloggie "scandal." I think awards are a fine idea and they should be run fairly and they're not very important but like all forms of popularity and attention they do matter, of course. They have real-world consequences. On the other hand, I don't really understand why so many panties are in a bunch about all this.

It sounds like the nomination/judging system was fairly lame and easily gamed and that there have been what Jimmy Carter likes to call "irregularities" in the voting. Maybe the whole thing should be tossed aside. It doesn't really seem worth getting worked up about.

Then again, maybe if I had friends involved, pro or con, it would matter more to me. Count the number of times the phrase "my friend" or "my friends" appears in this post.

Superbowl ads - tbd
Well, I only made it to half-time before real life intruded. I will annotate these images (and there's one more "roll" to follow) on the next go 'round:

A picture named pizzahut.jpgA picture named spacey.jpgA picture named schwab.jpgA picture named zebra.jpgA picture named osbourne.jpgA picture named matrix.jpgA picture named jerky.jpgA picture named castaway.jpgA picture named budlight.jpgA picture named matrx.jpgA picture named neo.jpgA picture named mikevmike.jpgA picture named espn.jpg

Superbowl ads - McDonald's / Gameday
Then there was an amusing McDonald's ad in which a father and son compare their hectic days:

mcdonalds

Mom suggests McD's and the punchline is the son saying, "That's what I love about that woman."

This was followed by an ad for the premier of the Jimmy Kimmel show and one for the Al Bundy version of Dragnet. Then the kickoff show started and I had to mute Celine Dion singing God Bless America. I put the sound back on for the Dixie Chicks harmonizing on a cool arrangement of the semi-unsingable Star-Spangled Banner.

Then there was another version of the roadtrip ad. Equally cute, but are they trying to sell electric cars to college kids?

A preview of men's tennis Masters, and then a funny ad for NFL Gameday 2003, featuring football fans tackling the guy who takes the last slice of pizza:

Superbowl ads - What you talkin' about, Willis?
The next ad was for Tears of the Sun, a new Bruce Willis movie...

Superbowl ads - roadtrip / football fans
roadtrip

First ad I tuned in for was a cute ad about a roadtrip, for Honda Element. Amusing, but no sale.

Next up was an ad for watching football. Heartwarming.

Never explain a joke
The usually impeccable attitude on display at The Gawker shows a slight crack today when editor/writer Elizabeth Spiers responds to an illiterate slam from some Tim Goodman groupie.

The main response on the Gawker home page is just perfect, but the extended entry tries too hard:

I was merely challenging his assumption that American audiences like the crap they're fed by network TV. Mr. Goodman's analysis implies that while he has perfectly good taste, network programming can be explained by demand created by other Americans who actually enjoy it. Who are these hypothetical people, we ask?
Elizabeth, never stoop to explaining your jokes. Even "fisking" the all-caps slam seems like a little too much effort for the payoff. Just running the email in all its glory probably did the trick.

Never let them see you sweat!
